Motell Fire in Cambridge Highlights Building Code Gaps
Ohio safety officials say current law and the Ohio Building Code would not have reduced the Cambridge motel fire toll. Enclosed stairwells might have kept smoke on the first floor, potentially saving nine lives. most victims died from thick black smoke after jumping from second-story windows. Officials note no automatic sprinklers are required in public accommodations and current flame spread rules may not have applied if renovations occurred since seven years ago.

Fire may bring new laws in Ohio building safety
The Holiday Inn fire that killed nine and injured 78 could push passage of a state requirement for automatic sprinklers or smoke detectors in public buildings. The measure, urged by Rep. Paul R. Leonard, died in the Ohio General Assembly more than two years ago after the Beverly Hills Supper Club disaster.

One Man's Bravery in Ohio Hotel Fire
Jeanette Riddle credits her boss Larry Flowers with saving her life during a Holiday Inn fire near Cambridge Ohio. Flowers crawled through smoke and, after two failed window breaks, smashed a glass wall to pull Riddle to safety. He was treated for arm cuts and singed eyebrows. The blaze killed nine and injured 78, with a prior plan for sprinkler mandates debated in the Ohio legislature. Flowers and Riddle were en route from Shipshewana Indiana to Charlestown West Virginia when the incident occurred Memorial Day weekend.
