Mayor Harold Finch and challenger Joe Dudley face off in a Republican primary with questions over Finch’s availability, a proposed municipal court, and city expansion plans. Dudley touts leadership experience and real estate ties while Finch defends partial duties and long term city projects.

The Norwalk Chamber of Commerce urged a November election on a city charter. Since Feb 21 council heard the proposal and took no action. Mayor Finch and Council President Crawford say no further study is known. City Solicitor Waugh has a ready resolution but notes 120 day rule and July 10 earliest adoption to place the issue on the November ballot.
The Senate clash over Vietnam intensifies as Gen Westmoreland criticizes dissent and Sen Stennis predicts 500000 U S troops in Vietnam by year end. McGovern and Young accuse Johnson of using Westmoreland to push more troops and silence critics.
A fire near New London destroyed a 35 by 75 foot barn and its contents on Ed Ganz’s farm on Exchange Road. Nearby cattle, a milkhouse, and grainary were saved. 200 pounds of weed spray and 1,100 bushels of soybeans burned, with soybeans still smoldering twelve hours later.
Amherst votes to seek admission to the EHOVE Vocational School District. The board accepted a formal resolution to be sent for EHOVE board consideration at its May 10 meeting, though action may be delayed.
Benedict School PTA votes to merge with Bronson PTA as elementary realignment creates three districts. If all mergers pass, Norwalk will reduce from five PTAs to three with Pleasant and League Street voting Thursday night. Amherst district annexation discussions tied to a Lorain plan add regional stakes.
Governor James A. Rhodes endorsed a 300 million comprehensive water development program for northwestern Ohio covering 27 counties including Huron and Erie. The plan envisions 37 reservoirs with 59.1 billion gallons capacity and 7 755 acres surface area, plus treatment plants and pipelines to Lake Erie.
