New Bridge Planned for Hasbrook Road Replacement

Engineers plan replacing the pre 1900 bow string bridge over Cole Creek on Hasbrook Road east of Ridge Road with a new concrete span. The bridge would sit 40 to 50 feet north, cost about 40000 dollars, and require easements from four property owners. Officials seek summer completion.

In Saigon a small U S force held off about 500 Viet Cong for eight hours until American armor and air power rescued them. Spokesmen report 164 Viet Cong killed near Saigon and 49 dead Communists left behind. US air raids targeted supply lines while saboteurs warned of a May 1 strike.

Norwalk Girl Struck by Dump Truck in Front of Home

A five year old Norwalk girl Lucinda Kirk ran into the right side of a northbound dump truck on North Old State Road at about 4 20 p m. The vehicle was driven by Harold E Pfeil 61 of Castalia. Lucinda was first taken to Fisher Titus Hospital then transferred to Elyria Memorial Hospital in serious condition with possible skull fracture and elbow fracture.

Woman In Accident Is In Poor Condition

An 83 year old woman, Clara Fowler of Milliman Road, is listed in poor condition at Fisher Titus Hospital after a two car collision at Route 61 and Milliman Road. Billy Webb and a passenger James Harvey were involved. Harvey was treated for contusions. A second crash on Route 224 near Willard involved Kenneth Ilg and a fatal pony incident.

St Pauls High School hosts a mock election led by history teacher Mike Gottfried with all students voting for a presidential candidate and writing in a VP choice. Airmen Rescued After Huey Downing Near Da Nang

Six airmen were rescued after two Army Hueys were shot down in Happy Valley, southwest of Da Nang. Air Force crews including Capt Tommy Stroud and Capt Lyn Oberdier arrived to provide fire and extraction, with ground fire forcing helicopters to depart and others join the operation.
