FBI on national TV asks for information on fugitive James Earl Ray alias Brice Starvo Galt charged with conspiracy and murder in Dr. Martin Luther King Jrs killing. Ray is armed and considered highly dangerous. A photo aired on ABCs The FBI.
North Korea faced UN objections after raids in the Demilitarized Zone left eight allied soldiers dead since Easter. A US 2nd Infantry Division patrol near Panmunjom suffered a fierce firefight with North Korean troops. three of the insurgents were reported dead. In Washington, Nixon led Gallup polls while some Republicans urged caution for New York Governor Rockefeller.
In Saigon UPI reports a Viet Cong defector warned of an imminent attack on the capital. Across six clashes near the capital, U.S. and South Vietnamese forces killed 123 Communists. Fighting continued at Khe Sanh and along the coast with Korean troops engaging North Vietnamese and air operations intensifying.
Demonstrators in the poor people's campaign planned by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr announce a Washington shanty town of large tents to pressure the Johnson administration. Abernathy leads three caravans from the South Midwest and Northeast beginning May 2 in Memphis with a memorial at the Lorraine Motel and a 100-person delegation visiting Washington offices to outline demands.
Defense Secretary Clifford said South Vietnamese forces are ready to take over more fighting in Vietnam as the United States plans to level off its effort and reduce troop levels. He noted rapid delivery of modern weapons and that by July South Vietnamese ground forces will be equipped with M16 rifles.

Charleston resident Pat Haverland will attempt a 75 day burial while alive to set a world record. She reported fatigue from nonstop phone calls and spoke with supporters including Johnny Weissmuller who plans to promote the stunt.
Norwalk police cleared three hit-skip accidents this weekend. Nicholas R. Miller, 43, of rural Berlin Heights, was jailed on 750 bond after walking out during questioning and later turning himself in. He faces charges of leaving the scene, resisting arrest, and driving without a license. A 17-year-old Milan area youth was cited into Juvenile Court for leaving the scene after a truck hit a car. In another case, Lloyd Harper Hite, rural Milan, was brought in after a car damage report tied to an Erie County owner. owner claimed no knowledge of the incident.
Terry Meyer age 21 of 11 Bouscau Ave. sustained first and second degree facial burns while a burning gasoline can caught fire in the hands of an unidentified man. Meyer was treated at Fisher-Titus Hospital and is listed in satisfactory condition. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Robert Meyers of 10 Woodward Drive.
Richard Gamble, 22, of 116 Elm Street Oberlin was treated at Fisher Titus Hospital after striking a telephone pole while descending in a parachute. The Reflector found no local records confirming the man or the accident, and the Elm Street house is Oberlin College student housing with no Gamble resident.
James G. Walcher 19 of rural North Fairfield was fined 25 and ordered to pay court costs after conviction in County Court Saturday for keeping a concealed weapon. Walcher pleaded not guilty but was found guilty by Judge Robert Wiedemann after Norwalk police found a six shot .32 caliber revolver under the front seat of his car during a Monday morning investigation of fireworks reports.
Mary Ann Rekart a junior won the Outstanding Bandsman trophy at St Paul High School Band Awards Banquet. The event recognized 70 senior band members and 25 beginners with certificates and letters as the 95 member band grew from 23 since director Roger Williams arrived.
Norwalk's United Buckingham Inc plans to move operations to an existing Denver building by August 1 after evaluating a location in Denver since January. President Donald Manlowe says details on staff transfers are undecided with no deadline for employee moves. The Norwalk Truck Lines building remains unsold for now.
