Norwalk Braces for Floods as Snow Returns and Rain Lifts

Norwalk faced new flood threats after nearly three inches of rain in 48 hours and a late snowburst. Downed power lines, a falling tree crippling Main Street traffic lights, and flooded roads from Vermilion River overflows added to damages including a beauty shop basement. State routes east of town reported washouts and high water while an agricultural official warned peaches may suffer damage within 24 hours.

Convoy Forming to Back Nixon Pledge in Pacific

A U.S. sea and air convoy including the battleship New Jersey begins forming in the Western Pacific to shield reconnaissance flights over the Sea of Japan. Defense officials say ships and planes are being shifted to provide necessary protection after Nixon warned intelligence craft would no longer be “fair game.”

Industry Paymaster Takes Oath As Service Director

William V. Mount, 51, of Middletown, sworn in as Norwalk safety service director effective May 1. A former Sharonville and Reading official, he comes from Kaiser Engineers, working on a $600 million Armco Middletown expansion. He succeeds Morley Price, with Mount promising a businesslike administration and city cooperation. Mount and his wife plan to move to Norwalk. they have two sons.

Funeral services set for GI Emmons E. Funk Jr.

Bellevue report states Emmons E. Funk Jr. 24, killed in Vietnam, body arriving Toledo airport this evening. He will lie in state at Foos Funeral Home in Bellevue after 7 p.m. Sunday. Funeral at St Michaels Church Marywood Tuesday at 10 30 a.m. with Rev Joseph Lapinski officiating. Burial in Parish Cemetery.

Home birth saves hospital costs as Reynolds delivers fifth child

Mrs. Harry Reynolds of Port Angeles, aged 31, gave birth at home two days ago to a baby boy over nine pounds, saying rising hospital costs prompted her to learn home delivery. She had previously faced a $352 hospital bill for an older child and cites books on baby care. Her husband, a logger, was at work during the event.

Norwalk Furniture plans new plant to boost output

Norwalk Furniture Corp. considers a new factory in Norwalk to raise unit production by 50 percent and potentially double employment in five years.
