Rep William E Minshall of Ohio asks President Nixon for an aerial survey of Lake Erie citing severe pollution. He warns the lake’s health endangers economies, recreation, and the health of millions of residents, calling it the world’s most polluted body of water.
In Prague crowds place pink carnations on St. Wenceslas while soldiers remove the blooms. The Czechoslovak Communist Presidium shrinks from 20 to 11 members, with conservatives dominating and Dubcek out of office. Meanwhile in Louisville a rookie firefighter on his second day forgets his pants during a junked car blaze call.
Kenneth F. Finch admitted killing Leo Zuniga after catching him with his wife Ellen in a Bakersfield cocktail bar. Finch said he shot Zuniga for breaking their Wednesday and Saturday dating arrangement. the shooting occurred Tuesday.
Louis Harris reports most Job Corps graduates keep their jobs and receive raises, and many bosses want more corpsmen. Yet after three years benefits fade without continued support, risking renewed discrimination as hearings probe Nixon plan to close over half of the 109 centers.
The San Francisco event staged a giant rolling quake and fire to calm nerves, recreating the 1906 disaster. Mayor Joseph Alioto led the recreation as the city watched the staged destruction in Civic Center.

President Nixon said U S aerial reconnaissance missions over waters near North Korea will resume with fighter cover after the EC121 was shot down. He said the flights are necessary for intelligence and will be protected and not a threat. He framed the incident as unprovoked and noted the plane stayed about 40 miles from the coast. He also cited improved prospects for Southeast Asia peace and opposed a unilateral South Vietnam troop withdrawal.
A Middletown associated man with Armco Steel and municipal experience is eyed to replace Morley Price as Norwalk service director. Mayor Harold Finch plans a Saturday press conference. salary cited at 13 500 dollars. Fifteen applications were considered, with several applicants declining or accepting other posts.
Clarence R. Fulton 61 of Omega Road Greenwich died at Willard Area Hospital after a farm accident on Vaughn Keefer’s Alpha Road property. He fell from a tractor platform and was run over by a disc. Coroner to rule on death. Survivors include wife Ethel two daughters son, six grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday Myers Funeral Home with Rev. Myron Ramsey officiating. Father Marcellus Lambillotte, 76, former pastor of St. Alphonsus Church in Peru from 1935 to 1953, died Wednesday in a Toledo rest home. His Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Maumee, with Bishop Donovan presiding.
In Los Angeles the prosecution told jurors they must decide Sirhan B. Sirhan's punishment for Kennedy's murder. Chief Prosecutor Lynn Compton said no precedent governs political assassins and the jury should follow their consciences in choosing life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Compton declined to comment on penalties. A seven to five women’s panel delivered a first degree murder verdict at 10 47 a m after nearly 17 hours of deliberation. Jurors briefly paused for instruction clarification on second degree murder. Sirhan appeared stoic as lawyers expressed disappointment.
Stanley K Day reports a San Francisco post office alcohol recovery program could save the government 100 million yearly. include all federal workers and armed forces could reach 1 billion. The program, six months old, has 34 participants and cost about 16 thousand. An average alcoholic costs an employer about 3 thousand annually.
The Norwalk Civil Service Commission seeks competitive exams for police and firemen. The police department is one officer short after Richard Mahaffey’s resignation, with no eligible candidates on file. The fire department is full but lacks an eligibility list should a vacancy occur.
A federal judge fined 14 courtroom spectators for contempt after a disturbance when he sentenced Peter W. Schurman, a UC Davis student, to five years in prison for draft card burning. Fines varied from 100 dollars or 25 days jail to 20 dollars or five days. one man received a suspended sentence and five years probation.
