Parachutist William Aguillard, 44, died after his parachute failed to open during a public flight in Johnson City Tennessee. The man was completing his 27th jump as about 200 spectators watched. Officials said the ripcord pulled but the chute did not deploy. The cause was not immediately known.
Federal auto emission standards saved about five million tons of carbon monoxide and one million tons of hydrocarbons in 1968. However motor vehicles released roughly 67 million tons of carbon monoxide and 11 million tons of hydrocarbons last year, per a Congress report on air pollution control progress.
About 1,000 Ohio University students demonstrated in Athens in front of President Vernon Alden's home Sunday night. They chanted for abolition of coed hours and against tuition increases, marching through downtown and blocking traffic. Water balloons were thrown at the city building as police watched. Julian Bond opposed national primaries and the direct popular vote, arguing it would not fix Electoral College issues. George E. Fouch deputy assistant secretary of defense began a 30 day sick leave after being convicted in Virginia court of shoplifting 6.13 dollars of electrical goods from a department store. He plans an appeal of a 100 dollar fine with 50 dollars suspended and has held his post since 1962.
Space officials say Neil Armstrong from Wapakoneta Ohio a 38 year old civilian astronaut will likely be the first American to walk on the moon next July 20. Commander of Apollo 11 Armstrong will be joined moments later by Air Force Col Buzz Aldrin as they land in the lunar module and conduct a two hour forty minute surface excursion near their landing site. Armstrong is a veteran astronaut and former test pilot.
A spelling contest sponsored by Huron County schools will be held at 7 30 p m Tuesday at Monroeville Elementary School. Eight elementary teams compete in two divisions with judges from Monroeville Greenwich and Greenwich Intermediate and a pronouncer Floyd D Chase. The junior high group features four schools with Brent Fox Karla Sprowl Kenneth Dalton Jennie Sloan and others.
