Puerto Rican migrants to undergo three day trial in Virginia orchards
About 250 Puerto Rican migrant workers will begin a three day trial period in Frederick County apple orchards after a closed meeting between the Frederick County Fruit Growers Association and the Virginia Employment Commission. Some 600 Jamaican workers remain in place under a federal court order, with the Labor Department arguing Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens eligible for jobs. Jamaicans are preferred by growers for their proven labor. Remaining Puerto Ricans will be evaluated for suitability. satisfactory workers will earn 2.71 dollars per hour and receive a plane ticket home at harvest end, while unsatisfactory workers will be sent home. Jamaicans will not be fired.

In a tight county race Martha Brittain edged Mary Whitmore 4449 to 4200 with about 500 absentee ballots pending Thursday that could swing the county treasurer contest. Norman S. Geiser won the GOP Register of Wills nomination 2532 to 1285 and will face Democrat Thomas Eichelberger. Incumbents Harry C. Smith and Howard Z. Stup were renominated for Me Orphans Court with a third seat potentially decided by absentee ballots where Shirley Happ led G Raymond Shipley 4960 to 4913.

Brunswick mayor pro tempore David Green was elected after a brief town meeting. Councilman Gary Barkman won a close runoff August 18 against Raymond B. Will and was sworn in by Mayor Jess D. Orndorff.
