Two Maryland incumbents toppled in party preliminaries

In Maryland, two county executives were defeated in the Democratic primary. Howard County's J Hugh Nichols won the nomination by beating incumbent Edward Cochran. Har ford County backed Thomas Barranger over Charles B Anderson, while Baltimore County saw Theodore Venetoulis not seek reelection, setting up two veterans for November. Donald Hutchinson led Democrats in Baltimore County with 28,637 votes to 24,969 for John C. Coolahan. Eugene Gibbe narrowly beat Clarence Ritter on the Republican side. Byron Wins Narrow Lead As Early Returns Pile Up

Shaff Reunion Held at Yellow Springs

The 14th Shaff descendants reunion was held August 6 at Yellow Springs Lions pavilion with William E Shaff family in charge. A buffet lunch followed by games including a peanut scramble for children and bingo for adults. Prizes went to the oldest attendee Mrs James Shaff Sr and the youngest child. Judge rejects ban on RR strike spread

In Washington a federal judge refused to ban a potential spread of the Norfolk and Western Railway strike to two other lines. Fred J Kroll of the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks stated the union may take appropriate action, though officials said no immediate coast to coast strike plans exist. Rail work stoppages tied to the N and W dispute began last week in Chicago and Buffalo. Attorneys for the railroads had no comment. The N and W strike began July 19 over work rules.
