Six-Week Dry Period Ended
Forest fires in Western Maryland and eastern West Virginia ended their six week dry spell after a day of heavy rain. Forester Lester McClung said the last blaze was controlled ten minutes before the rainfall, with about 3,000 acres burned in Buffalo Creek Grant County near Bayard and timber losses around 30,000 dollars. Eight or nine days of fires destroyed about 6,000 acres of West Virginia woodland with over 1,000 people helping combat the blazes. Maryland counties Allegany, Washington, Frederick and Garrett reported 800 acres burned and now out.
