Conrail merger eyed to boost competition and reach
Mr. Goode argues a Norfolk Southern Conrail tie up would create a more balanced eastern rail system by increasing competition. The pair would trail Union Pacific and Burlington Northern in track mileage but extend Conrail into the Southeast. NS runs 14,500 miles across 20 states and Canada, plus a trucking unit, while Conrail covers 11,000 miles in 12 states plus DC and Quebec. CSR operates over 16,000 miles across 20 states, with revenue from the rail sector nearing last year’s total.
