Randolph Butler of Burkittsville agreed to model for a memorial statue of Thurgood Marshall after a Knoxville sculptor Toby Mendez approached him in a bank. The project aims to install the statue at Lawyer's Mall in Annapolis near the State House grounds. Butler recalls the meeting as a surprise and a possible joke that turned real with a package months later.
Mr Butler modeled for a 7'4 bronze statue honoring the Brown v Board of Education landmark. Sculptor Mr Mendez used Butler as a life double to capture fabric drape and anatomy. The unveiling and dedication planned for today at 1 p.m. draws Butler and his family’s excitement.
