Head vase collecting boom sparked by Betty Lou Nichols
Betty Lou Nichols created head vases in the 1940s on her California kitchen table, with Chinese producers copying molds due to lack of patents. The hobby grew into a publishing niche, with Cole compiling pictures and prices, organizing Head Hunters conventions, and building a newsletter audience. The Marilyn Monroe Relpo piece and Disney heads are among the most sought after. Cole’s collection remains a fraction of all head vases, and the future is uncertain as her daughter shows little interest.
