Surplus Can't Be Used To Up Teachers' Pay

Baltimore officials dispute funding a proposed 800 dollar wage raise for teachers from the state's surplus. Attorney General Hall Hammond told the Legislative Council Budget and Finance Committee the surplus cannot finance the raise without tax changes. Governor McKeldin vetoed a tax-increase plan tied to the raise, arguing counties should fund any pay hike.

Ten Czechs Escape Across Iron Curtain on Foot

Ten Czechs including women and children escaped toward the West walking past the border after a failed attempt to breach the Czechoslovakian iron curtain. They exchanged fire with guards in the last 150 yards of the dash but no one was hit. The group had planned the flight for some time and built a makeshift armored car with steel plates to aid their crossing. They abandoned the vehicle when it could not pass a road barrier around 8 a.m. at the border area near the railroad tracks used by a prior escape train.
