Native Chestnut Tree Is Gone From Maryland
State Forester F W Besley announced the extinction of native Maryland chestnut trees amid the chestnut blight that devastated forests. He noted Calvert County reports of a limited comeback and observed Japanese and Chinese varieties may endure but lack native timber value. A Calvert County route operator, George M Boyd, reported a 20 foot native chestnut with healthy burrs and mature nuts that were small, predicting few native trees will remain. At one time the Catoctin mountains held many chestnut trees.
