700 Acres of Timber Destroyed in Fire
About 700 acres of valuable timber land burned over in recent forest fires in Catoctin Mountain along Hunting Creek region. Deputy state forest warden C Cyril Klein estimates after a survey. Loss includes about 3 000 split rails valued at 300 dollars owned by Grover Harve and about 20 cords of ranked wood. Firefighters were paid 20 cents an hour. Seventeen boys from Mount Alto State Forestry School of Pennsylvania aided at no cost to the state with tools. Seventeen men from G J Trexier's Stave Mill aided in fighting the fire. The timely aid of the stave mill men helped check the fire before reaching the city watershed. No fire reached the watershed. Fire threatened property Monday night but was checked at the edge. Fire wardens Floyd Lovell and George Willard supervised. Citizens in the area show mixed sympathy for fire prevention efforts. Plans include showing fire prevention films at Garfield and Mt Philip schoolhouses with Karl B Pfeiffer overseeing. Atlantic City to host a major gathering of professional women in May at the American Health Congress with nurses from all states, Canada, Porto Rico and Hawaii participating.
