Two of seven long term convicts who escaped from the new Stateville penitentiary were found hiding in a hay loft on John Rose’s farm near Joliet. Police tracked others through LaSalle County as posse and citizens pursued along railroad tracks. A guard captain and a trusted inmate were found handcuffed to trees near Morris, and a gun battle left several escapees wounded or dead.

Between 15 000 and 20 000 attendees helped mark the third annual Shenandoah apple blossom festival in Winchester Virginia.
