New Market Groups Learn About Hospital Operations
The New Market Grange held an open meeting with the New Market Homemaker's Club as Frederick Memorial Hospital administrators spoke. Dow called hospitals an eighty billion dollar industry and the second largest in the country, projected to become the largest within two to three years. Trexler discussed operating costs, noting a rising $100 daily semi private room cost by 1975 and a 65 percent payroll share, driven by Medicare Medicaid and wage demands. He forecast a five percent yearly growth and a three to four year beds shortage. Herrold outlined health care careers, urging early planning, noting new fields and rising qualification standards, with a nationwide physician shortage and local nursing capacity adequate for now.
