Ashau Camp Falls to North Vietnamese After Two Day Battle
North Vietnamese regulars overran the Ashau Valley Special Forces camp near the Laotian frontier after a two day engagement. U.S. advisers and Montagnard irregulars fought to defend the position, with heavier Red forces estimated at two thousand or more. Lt. Col. Kenneth B. Taree confirmed the fall as Saigon dismissed Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chanh Thi from his posts. Aides described heavy American and Montagnard casualties and several aircraft losses during the retreat.
