Supreme Court tightens proof in job bias cases
The Supreme Court, in a 5 4 decision, ruled that under Title VII a plaintiff must show the employer’s stated reasons for firing are not believable to prove discrimination. Melvin Hicks, a black former supervisor at St Mary’s Honor Center in St Louis, lost his bid after the court deemed the employer’s nondiscriminatory reasons may be true. The ruling limits proving bias by requiring a tougher showing beyond falsified explanations.
