The Future of Electricity and Rail Transit
At the Great Barrington convention, leaders like Steinmetz and Oberlin Smith predicted electricity as motive power for railroads. They foresaw trains NY to Philadelphia or Boston at 120 to 180 mph within decades, with steam railways replaced by electric lines and long distance engines emerging within twenty five years. They also noted electricity could power homes and cooking soon, with cost the main hurdle and rapid advances already achieved.
