Humble Origins Highlight Humphrey Baldwin TV Portrait
New York program on WNEW-TV aired voices of Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey and author James Baldwin describing contrasting childhoods. Humphrey recalled a happy Doland, South Dakota, childhood ending with the 1930s Depression and a family home sale. Baldwin spoke of Harlem hardship, police stops, library visits, and turning to writing as a path to another world. The broadcast repeated next Sunday and also aired on Metropolitan stations.
