Local project promotes Kennedy mobile offices with two units planned, pending approvals from Lub Ub Inc and Agricultural authorities. Adjacent facilities highlighted as essential to the award and best in class for bioscience and philanthropy.
The Frederick County Board of Education named Dr John L Carnochan Jr to a four year term as superintendent of Frederick County public schools. Acting since last week he will begin the new term August 1 with a salary of 17000 while former superintendent James A Sensenbaugh receives severance pay. The board praised his work since October and noted a new assistant superintendent may be hired from outside the county.
Thomas Welton Brown of Frederick has been appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The 19 year old Frederick High graduate is finishing a Maryland University year at College Park and will report to the class entering this summer. Brown excelled in football and track junior and varsity teams and held student government roles. He sang in the church choir and was All State Chorus in his senior year.
Frederick High and Linganore High plan baccalaureate Sunday and graduation exercises next week. Frederick hosts 421 graduates with two seniors speaking at commencement and a new program featuring student speakers. Linganore also adds two senior speakers with choir and band performances advancing the ceremony.
Gov. Richard J. Hughes spoke at Mount St. Mary’s College urging graduates to emulate Pope John XXIII and John F. Kennedy. He highlighted service to God and fellow man, praised Kennedy's call for national purpose, and mentioned the Peace Corps as a path to act on that duty. Hughes received an honorary degree as nephew Edward J. Hulse Jr. joined the class.
The meeting of the Mayor and Aldermen scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. was postponed until June 11 because of the death of Mrs. Alice W. Magaha, wife of Mayor E. Paul Magaha. A public hearing on the new tax rate will be held Thursday, June 18 with the Mayor and Aldermen in a Board of Equalization.
Maryland police and skin divers searched the Monocacy River near the U S 240 bridge for safes believed dumped last year. Cpl Henry J Stafford and Det Lt Ellis G Carty found a small metal wall safe under two feet of water. divers continued the hunt for more safes possibly seven or eight.
The Francis Scott Key Hotel in Frederick plans a year long remodeling to modernize 200 rooms and convert the second floor to offices while preserving colonial charm. Construction could begin in July with full remodeling late this year or early next, pending Hotel Board approval.
The Maryland State Board of Education will hold a special meeting next Tuesday to decide whether to grant a hearing to Emmitsburg residents unhappy with the Frederick County plan to locate a high school near Thurmont. The case involves site debates between Jamison-Wivell and Staub locations, with local attorney Aleck Resnick representing objectors.
Secretary of State Rusk and Defense Secretary McNamara returned from a Honolulu conference with recommendations for President Johnson to strengthen Southeast Asia against Communist threats. They denied any approved plans to widen the Vietnam war and prepared to brief Johnson amid questions on North Vietnam and Red China. The trip followed Johnson’s visit to New England and included broader aims to support South Vietnam and Nguyen Khanh’s government. Trading was light as the New York Stock Market showed a technical snapback in early afternoon.
Rev. William Sloane Coffin Jr., Yale University chaplain, will preach Hood College’s baccalaureate sermon for the graduating class Friday at 7 30 p m in Coffman Chapel. Hood College Choir will sing two anthems under Rev James A Smith Jr. Coffin, a prominent interfaith activist and former Freedom Rider, has long chaired national and international boards and helped launch the Peace Corps Field Training Center in Puerto Rico in 1961. He is married to Eva Rubinstein, ballet dancer and actress.
The Board of Education approved an 549280 bid from Glen Construction of Rockville for Sabillasville Elementary School and sent the proposal to Frederick County Commissioners for final approval. The high 18.30 per square foot cost reflects eight classrooms a multipurpose room kitchen health area and library. A canopy at Liberty Elementary was discussed though funds for a new driveway were not in this year’s budget.
City Engineer Robert A. Whiteford reports no oil present in Carroll Creek after checks on a reported drainage incident. He noted possible day-by-day trace could exist but current tests show no contamination. A concrete drain from Hood College area was cited as a potential source but later tests found nothing. The department will continue periodic checks of the creek. The Middletown Elementary School board approved renovations costing 1,489.50 to add two classrooms at Middletown Elementary School.
A construction project on College Avenue is underway by Dewey Jordan Inc in cooperation with the city and is expected to wrap up within an unspecified timeframe.

Barry Goldwater swept California's GOP primary capturing 86 delegates as late Los Angeles returns boosted him to a narrow victory over Nelson Rockefeller. final tally 969,957 to 938,386 with 29,800 of 32,861 precincts reporting. Goldwater narrows path to 655 convention votes. Salinger wins Democratic Senate nom, faces Murphy. Brown’s delegation slate dents Cranston effort.
Santa Claus owned by John Ismay wins the richest Epsom Derby, finishing ahead of Indiana owned by Charles Engelhard of New York and Dilettante II owned by Larry Gelb. The 15-8 favorite surged from the rear to prevail in the final strides, collecting a prize of 201,787 dollars.
