Commissioner To Be Named For Maryland Mental Hygiene

Governor Lane names a temporary commissioner to run Maryland Mental Hygiene until a fulltime appointee is chosen. The move follows a three hour meeting with the Mental Hygiene Advisory Board and amid hospital system overhaul begun by the 1949 Legislature. Dr George H Preston resigns tomorrow. Johns Hopkins psychiatrist Dr John C Whitehorn chairs the advisory board.

Lynchers of Negro Sought in Irwinton Ga

Police hunted the lynchers of a Negro to day as two agents of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Sheriff George Hatcher searched for Caleb Hill Jr. abducted from the jail Sunday night, beaten, and shot to death. Residents in the small town showed little interest.

Lynching Incident Highlights Racial Tensions At Roadside Bar

Sheriff Hatcher reports two bullets found in Hulls body after a disturbance at a Negro road house. The victim Hill, 28, was shot three times with one bullet entering the head. A man claimed the event did not upset a checker game while another dismissed it as a Negro affair. Hall, a breadwinner of nine, was arrested after allegedly grabbing the sheriff’s pistol during the incident. Two white men allegedly entered later and took Hall’s keys.

Bond Issues Approved By Montgomery County Council

The Montgomery County Council near the end of its first annual session authorized bond issues up to $5,465,000 for public works construction. To meet the May 31 deadline for enactment of local laws previously handled by the Maryland General Assembly, the council acted today.

County Council Votes for Bonds and Nonpartisan Primaries

The council, in session, authorized up to 4 265 000 in bonds for county school buildings and smaller sums for roads drainage and off street parking in Silver Spring. They tabled library proposals and enacted a nonpartisan primary and election rule. A measure fixed the maximum tax rate for fire departments near Damascus.
