Judge Rules Police Admissible Statement In Child Abuse Case
Frederick County Circuit Judge Herbert L. Rollins ruled Wednesday that a statement by Steven Hoover to Frederick City Police is admissible at trial. Hoover, 41, faces charges of child abuse, second degree assault, and reckless endangerment from last February. Officer Gene Alston testified he briefly spoke with Hoover about the allegations after advising him of Miranda rights. Hoover said no threats or promises were made and that he began talking about the case before being fully informed of rights. Handy argued the cat was out of the bag before rights were conveyed. The judge noted the arrest handling appeared sensitive and trusted there was no trickery. Trial is set for January 28.
