King Holiday Commission Fights for Funds and Fame
Washington today marks the first national King birthday observance. The Martin Luther King Jr Federal Holiday Commission, created in 1984 without funding, relied on private donations and federal agencies to stage events in Atlanta and nationwide. With only $300,000 raised by December, the agency pressed on through "shoestring" support from about two dozen agencies, including payroll for staffers and printing 100,000 pledge cards aimed at rallying support for a King Memorial. The piece notes the commission will go out of business in April after reporting to Congress and the president.
