Winter ice wanes as cold snap ends by Tuesday

The region braces for a sharp cold spell with overnight lows near 10 to 15 degrees and highs around 20 degrees or more below Sunday. Meteorologists expect the cold to last only into late Tuesday. Park officials report unsafe ice on Cunningham Falls Lake and slow progress skating at Pinecliff Park and Collar Taba, with ice thickening hampered by fluctuating temperatures.

U S warships escort merchant ships near Iran

An American cargo ship intercepted and searched by the Iranian Navy reached Fujaira Port as U S warships were reported shadowing other American vessels in Gulf sea lanes. Officials cited safety, with the ship’s 43 crew and captain Robert Reimann aboard, and noted no arms were found aboard.

Heating Neglected At Clarksburg Farmhouse Fire

Montgomery County investigators probe the Clarksburg home at 22901 Slidell Road after a weekend fire killed six people. landlord Harry Leet did not install heating and the house had only two wood stoves with no central system. Fire officials seek to identify the stove’s maker and determine illegal tenancy and safety code violations. Four others escaped as carbon monoxide levels were reportedly very high. victims include Robert Barnhouse and his relatives along with Joan King and Beverly Seabolt among the seriously injured. Wood Stove Safety A Life Saver

With rising energy costs residents heat homes with wood stoves. Modern airtight stoves save fuel but pose hazards. An explosion in a stove Sunday morning may have caused a fire that burned two Clarksburg houses and killed six people. State fire officials cite eight 1984 fire deaths nationwide from improper stove installation. Frederick County fire companies report chimney fires over the past two months, many from creosote buildup. Green wood and cold chimneys worsen creosote. creosote deposits are common in stoves.

Fierce street battles in east Beirut escalate clashes

In east Beirut the Lebanese Forces say they seized two districts from Amin Gemayel's Phalange in a renewed Christian power struggle. Hospitals report five militiamen dead and 14 wounded. A fuel dump near the harbor was set ablaze and civil defense units were urged to contain the fire.

City plans first Frederick County home for handicapped children

Community Living Inc seeks to open Frederick County's first residential unit for disabled children with a state grant. The home in west Frederick will house three youths ages 10, 13, and possibly 17, all with physical handicaps and mental retardation. The program totals about 47 000 dollars for six months and aims to provide a family setting while parents gain relief from caregiving burdens. The children will attend Rock Creek School, and officials expect a waiting list to form as demand grows.
