Southern Maryland to Chesapeake Bay bridge study costs tolls and traffic
A Maryland Authority study estimates an 6.2 mile lower bay bridge between Calvert and Dorchester counties would cost about 80 million dollars per year to operate and would reduce traffic on the Annapolis span. By 1995 daily traffic would be 10 000 to 15 000 vehicles, mostly existing Bay crossing users. Opponents say the project lacks benefits and would burden taxpayers while backers note regional highway upgrades and possible donations from Comptroller Louis Goldstein.

Panel to probe shuttle blast and NASA budget plans
The White House announced an independent panel will review the shuttle disaster and prevent recurrence while Acting NASA chief William Graham said the move signals continued support. Reagan is set to request about 7.7 billion dollars for fiscal 1987, including a 400 million boost, despite federal freeze trends. Representative Manuel Lujan and Senator Jake Garn urged naming a permanent NASA administrator to replace James Beggs, who is under indictment, with discussions ongoing on whether Graham or another candidate should lead.

Hughes confident Maryland will keep AAA bond rating
Governor Harry Hughes voiced confidence that Maryland will retain its AAA rating for a $124 million bond sale set for February 19. After meetings with Moody's and Standard & Poor's in New York, he said the rating agencies offered no assurances but seemed satisfied with Maryland's handling of the savings and loan issue and the $35 million budget surplus. The formal rating could come late this week or next week, with eight states currently holding AAA.
