Historic Middletown house gutted by fire

A late night blaze destroyed a yellow brick house at 6838 Picnic Woods Road in Middletown Valley. Owner Kim Firestone and firefighters battled flames from interiors and a porch, with embers from a woodstove igniting newspapers. Neighbors recall a 16 room home built in the early 1700s. a dog named Flash died in the fire. Fire officials said crews saved some furniture and paintings and fought the fire with deck guns and ladder operations, drafting water from a nearby pond. Firefighters remained on scene into the night as multiple departments helped contain the blaze.

Four Rotorex workers treated after carbon monoxide leak

About 250 workers were evacuated at the Rotorex plant in Walkersville after four or perhaps five employees were hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning. Three remained under testing. two were released by noon. Firefighters evacuated the plant after a reported leak around 10:30 a.m. The incident follows a prior propane explosion at Rotorex last week. FMH staff reported high patient load as they treated and transported victims to Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Budget bill to cost Md. $189 million
