Asbestos project manager indicted for extortion attempt
A Frederick county resident and asbestos study project manager, De Mare Halpern, 32, was indicted on two counts of attempting to extort money from a subcontractor and a company vice president. He allegedly threatened financial harm unless sums over 300 dollars were paid. Halpern surrendered to state police and was released on bond, with the investigation supported by Maryland Attorney General investigators. The state’s 500 million dollar civil suit against asbestos manufacturers and miners seeks to curb hazards from asbestos, used in fireproofing and insulation. Halpern was suspended from his employer Tractor Jite. The case is linked to FDG and a Rockville office subcontract.
