The weatherman forecast a white Christmas with snow expected to start tonight and continue tomorrow. Temperatures near or below freezing will keep snow on the ground, with a possible light accumulation though no firm amounts yet. December cold snaps see readings around 12 degrees, rising to about 24 tonight and a maximum near 32 degrees tomorrow.

Record low temperatures spread, with up to 10 inches of snow north of New York City and 2 to 7 inches in New England while traffic, flights, and schools faced widespread disruption. At least 19 deaths were linked to storm related accidents.
Three federal judges ruled that Governor Orville Freeman overstepped his authority by using National Guardsmen to shut Wilson and Co. packing plant at Albert Lea. They ordered the plant reopen and stayed injunction to Sunday midnight for appeal. Freeman had declared martial law after violence during a strike, but the court said military rule cannot replace lawful local authority.

Newark longshoreman Frank Bodner received $176 restored after a lost $150 cash envelope vanished during a September load to Germany. A Hamburg worker found Bodner’s envelope among frozen turkeys, Bildzeitung alerted, and Bodner was located. He plans to repay colleagues and send $30 to Grottke with Christmas wishes.
