Bureau To Let Out Knowledge Of Gamblers
The Internal Revenue Bureau will turn over complete applications for the Federal gambling tax stamps to local police, naming all participants and operations from street corners to casinos. The move follows a crackdown plan targeting about 15,000 suspected gamblers and 2,575 registered bookies and numbers operators. The policy shift prompts gamblers to face federal stamp violations or local criminal action. In New York, Edwin Leland James, 61, longtime editor of the New York Times, died after a heart attack.

Magistrate H Reese Shoemaker Jr postponed a speeding case for one week to allow Charles A Willard of Rt. 5 to have his speedometer checked. Trooper Whitney testified Willard failed to stop at Route 340 and was clocked at up to 70 mph, adding a second speeding charge. Willard cited automatic gears and no oncoming cars as explanations. Willard paid $6.45 for the stop citation. A separate red ticket forfeiture of $1 arose when James Luckadoo failed to appear for a 2 to 6 am parking citation.
