Deer kills dropped to near nothing this morning in the county mountains after 46 were reported yesterday on opening day of the six day hunting season. Deputy Game Warden Marvin Myers at Lewistown said no deer had been reported by early afternoon. Harold H. Elser of Maryland Department of Research and Education is at the station aiding measurements of hind leg length antler base diameter to gauge herd health and trends. Similar checks are being done at five other stations statewide with no conclusive findings yet.

Nine inmates at Spring Grove Hospital for the criminally insane escaped last night by tearing a heavy metal grate from a sunporch window while other inmates watched television. Two described as violent were identified as Robert Northrup and Richard Tenkins. One man, a feeble minded prisoner, was later caught along Washington boulevard near the Calvert distillery. Authorities conducted a wide search of the countryside for the others. The incident followed the discovery of the pried window screen and a sawed off bolt head.

Blood Drive In Emmitsburg District Breaks Records

Washington December 4 A Marine was killed and four others injured in two separate crashes in the area. The deceased, 20 year old Robert Cozait, and a 22 year old Marine Doyle Brookshire were from Dahlgren Virginia. In the Woodbridge crash, a car and Greyhound bus collided at Shirley Highway and Route 1 injuring three more occupants whose names were not yet available.

Martinsburg West Virginia December. Pj Charles Bartgis a 39 year old farmer was shot in the head and is in critical condition after a deer hunting accident. State conservation officer Elwood Bowers and State Police report Bartgis was in a field about 250 feet from Elwood Bowers when a deer ran between them. Bartgis fired twice while Bowers fired four times and an unseen bullet struck Bartgis. The deer was not killed though blood traces suggest it was wounded.
