Thurmont Names Richard Howard as Police Chief
Richard Eugene Howard, 32 of Funkstown, named Thurmont police chief after a monthlong search. He begins duties immediately as two more officers are hoped to join, with two special deputies remaining until a full force is in place. Howard is a Williamsport patrolman and former constable, deputy sheriff, and Army veteran, with education in business law and criminology. He and his wife Judy plan to move to Thurmont this month.

Bloodmobile collects 114 pints during State Farm visit
Postmaster James A. Grove, chairman of the county blood program, reports 114 pints collected at the bloodmobile’s Wednesday stop at the State Farm Insurance office. About 200 were scheduled, including 44 employees. 86 kept appointments, 41 walked in, 13 were deferred, and 30 walk-ins were first-time donors. Richard L. Scott and Rudolph Toms received two gallon pins, Willard H. Simpson a one-gallon pin. Next visit is Monday, Aug. 2, at Evangelical Lutheran Church on East Church Street from 3 to 7:30 p.m.

Detrick Soldier Hurt In Motorcycle Crash
A Fort Detrick soldier, Timothy A. Schaeffer, 21, of Belleville Illinois, is in fair condition at Walter Reed Army Hospital after being thrown from his motorcycle on Gambrill Park Road near Frederick. He suffered facial lacerations and head injuries when speeding and failing to negotiate a left curve caused the bike to overturn. No charges have been filed. Another crash on U.S. 40 west of Frederick involved Ophelia Greenlee, 48, of Braddock Pa, whose car struck a tractor trailer driven by Charles L. Donaldson 39 of Garrett Pa. Greenlee was charged with driving an unsafe motor vehicle after her gas pedal stuck and she collided with the guardrails and the trailer.

Frederick City awards winter police uniforms contract
Frederick City boards last night awarded New Schroeder's Inc. a $3,583 contract to supply winter uniforms for the police department. Invitations were sent to four local stores, Maj. Charles V. Main said, but Schroeder's was the sole bidder, providing 34 coats at 47 each, 49 trousers at 23, 23 caps at 5, 5 reefers at 60, and 62 shirts at 8.
