Nebraska gardener fights grasshoppers with Nosema locustae
In Ogallala area Nebraska Kathi Jorgensen uses bran laced with Nosema locustae to combat grasshoppers on her organic garden. The parasite kills or weakens the pests when applied early season. She relies on a windmill water system, grass clippings for moisture, and sells surplus vegetables after a bumper harvest. Noseina locustae products like Grasshopper Attack sell for about $16 per 10 000 square feet.

Pesticide alternatives face delays as demand grows
The shift to less toxic options alarms gardeners and challenges makers. Safer Inc. owns SunSpray an ultra fine horticultural oil for scale whitefly aphids and more. EPA delays and internal corporate changes slow smaller packaging and wider availability. Insecticidal Soap remains the main alternative but requires proper dilution water quality and targeted spray to be effective.

Exterminate hornets and wasps near human habitat
Hornets wasps and mud daubers pose risks to all, not only the allergic. Identify nests above ground by football shaped hornet nests, papery pale wasp nests, and mud tube structures. Spray at dusk or night using carbaryl malathion or specific wasp formulas, wear protective gear, and seek medical help for severe reactions or multiple stings.
