Bush in Saudi deployment vows defensive, aims Iraqi pullout

President Bush announced U S troops would take up defensive positions in Saudi Arabia to deter Iraq after its invasion of Kuwait. Missiles and tanks join Gulf force buildup

U S forces in Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf will deploy heavy tanks and Tomahawk cruise missiles to strike specific Iraqi targets. The battleship Wisconsin carries 32 Tomahawks and heads to the gulf, escorting the carrier Saratoga. Marines prepositioned ships with M1 A1 Abrams and M60 tanks move toward the region.

County trims free dumping limit at landfill to half ton

Frederick County Commissioners voted 3-1 to cut the free dumping maximum from one ton to a half-ton at the county landfill effective Aug 31. They cited undercutting by commercial haulers and discussed charging all loads, while noting weighing and fee structure must be developed with a consultant.

Cycle Across Maryland tour stops in Frederick crowd grows

900 bicyclists, including Murray Katz and Tom Hendricks, gathered at Frederick High School for the second annual 350 mile CAM tour. The six day ride began in Havre de Grace and ends at St. Marys College with riders paying up to 110 dollars. Organizers emphasized camaraderie and scenic stops rather than finishing order.

Bell Thompson and Jones win Brunswick council seats

Nearly 50 percent turnout produced three seats for newcomers Brent Bell Carroll Jones and incumbent Jesse Thompson. Bell led with 485 votes, Jones 455, Thompson 425. Incumbent Frank Strakowsky finished fourth with 405. Doris Baker election judge reported 898 voters of 1,875, a 49.8 percent turnout.

Weisberg refutes Texas man’s JFK plot claim

Harold Weisberg, a top Kennedy assassination expert, dismissed Ricky Don White of Midland Texas as false. White alleges his father Roscoe White acted on CIA orders to kill Kennedy, contradicting the Warren Commission. Authorities called the theory ludicrous.
