Walkersville Faces Water Budget Deficit and Rising Costs
Walkersville's general fund is healthy but the water budget for fiscal year 1999 shows a deficit of over 331,596 dollars. To cover shortfalls, reserves will be tapped leaving about 173,000 dollars. Major costs include 75,000 dollars for filling a Heritage Farm Park tower sinkhole and 67,000 dollars for water treatment chemicals and salt. A proposed new water source at 100,000 dollars was dropped as unaffordable, while plans for a future one million gallon tower would require about 1.3 million dollars and higher tap fees.
