Government Must Pay for Medical Aid to Aliens
Judge Mayer of the United States district court rules the government must fund medical care for aliens arriving at Ellis Island who are found to suffer temporary contagious illnesses. The decision rejects requiring Holland-American Steamship to cover treatment costs, stating immigration laws do not obligate ships to pay. If upheld, the ruling could cost the government about $1,000,000 annually and apply to all steamship lines.
