Nitrogen Shortage Unlikely to Boost U.S. Fertilizer Supply

Arthur S. King notes that the United States faces an about 10 percent rise in nitrogen stocks next year but little chance of it improving Northwest nitrogen fertilizer supplies. The Columbia Metals plant at Salem, key to the region, has been closed since February due to lack of hydrous ammonia, with possible restart only if army ammonia can be freed.

Farms to gain ten percent nitrogen next year

Announcement expects 10 percent more nitrogen for farms in the United States next year from higher imports from Chile and Canada, modest domestic output growth, and diverted army plant production for Germany and Japan. Nitrogen use last year reached 817000 tons, the most ever, but still fell short of demand. Local notes report visits by Ray Collier and A C Plehiets to relatives in Oregon and California.
