Birds and farms mix on Mount Dora Audubon field trip
The Mount Dora Audubon Society reports its first field trip of the season on November 8 yielded about 40 bird species including warblers and other song birds. The group visited Duda Farms near Lake Jem where flooded fields usually host hundreds of ducks. this year few ducks were seen due to limited flooding. Hawks observed included marsh hawks red tailed red shouldered and the American kestrel. Coots were numerous though not ducks. The writer notes local mucklands at Zellwood and Zellwin Farms for nematode control and mentions a kestrel preying on large insects. A separate note describes a sick or injured bird with a foot lump diagnosed previously by Dr. Fred Andrews. The writer ends with a quail covey near the window and nearby raisins affecting their behavior.
