Nine candidates enter the Mount Dora city council race with four seats open and incumbent Tommy Houser seeking re election. Mayor Jesse Willmott faces no opposition though Jacqueline Bowman briefly contested before withdrawing. Election day is Tuesday December 12.
A citizen letter urges Sylvan Shores residents to seek city voting rights and join the broader community at the ballot box. The author praises nonresidents who contributed to local culture, recreation and service, calling for their inclusion in city elections and council actions.
City council notes annexation stakes for Sylvan Shores and area residents, with past defeats cited. Voter approval requires a majority in Mount Dora and the annexed area. Other actions include leasing Fisherman’s Headquarters to W. T. Shipes, owner of Idler Marina, for 1 1/2 years, with maintenance duties included. The Lake Dora waterfront parcel was acquired, adding over 1000 feet of lakefront. The Mount Dora Golf Association seeks city help for paving and building modifications at the golf club, estimated at 5875 dollars. Bids for a sanitation van were opened. The Kiwanis Club of Mount Dora presents Travel and Adventure Series sixth season show “Colorful Colorado” by Howard Pollard. Pollard acts as trail boss guiding viewers through Colorado’s plains valleys and peaks with a back country focus. Thanksgiving night at 8 p.m. the Community Building hosts the event for Mount Dorans.
The Christmas Seal Mobile chest X-ray unit will be in Umatilla on November 28 and Mount Dora on November 29, operating 10 to 1 and 2 to 4 both days. Dr. John B. Hall urges all Lake Countians to use the free screening as part of annual health checks amid persistent tuberculosis concerns.
Dr. Robert Crow of Mount Dora attended the Federal Aviation Agency Seminar in New Orleans. The program certifies doctors to conduct physical exams for pilots. He emphasized that regular attendance is required to maintain FAA examiner status and noted sessions on cardio vascular disease.
The first annual Dora Invitational drew 94 players to Mount Dora Golf Course with entrants from Panama City and nearby communities. Over 2000 in prizes were awarded across 11 flights plus top overall honors. Jack Shubert led with a 212 total, followed by Jim Keedy 213 and Lou Essex 214, after three rounds of play over Friday to Sunday. Ties in the fourth flight forced a sudden death playoff among Jerry Barthalow, George Goosak and Stan Hines, won by Barthalow.
