Last Sunday at St. Marys Baptist Church the Sun day School began at 9 45 led by Mrs M L Gilbert with lessons and explanations from the pastor. Rev Russell delivered an inspiring 11 15 sermon as the community mourned Mrs Zella Mae Larry at 2 30 in Tavares. The Loving Home Band prepared for Mount Dora performances while clubs and sick lists highlighted church life.
Early merit system examinations to be held by the System Council serving the State Welfare Board the Florida Industrial Commission and the U S Employment Service offer Lake and Sumter county residents a chance to qualify for state employment. Tests cover 14 classes including typing stenographic clerical accounting statistical and key punch operations with vacancies filled from established registers. Applications must be filed with the Merit System Office by midnight May 18. Foresters rate Alexander Springs highly and plan major improvements including picnic grounds shelters beaches and boat docks in the Ocala National Forest. The project near State Road 55 between Altoona and Astor Park hinges on funding and includes road plans from Eustis to Palatka via 261.
Public notice lists Lake County properties to be sold at public outcry on June 10 1946 at Tavares Court House. Descriptions include numerous lots in Little Acres Tavares Dixie Highway Eustis Mt Plymouth Astor Groveland and Okahumpka Terrace among others. Trust of the Internal Improvement Fund of Florida reserves certain mineral and road easement rights. Citizens may obtain Form 57 at the local post office and mail it to the Chief Price Clerk at the Lake Sumter area Price Control office in Leesburg. Applications are filed for vacancies in local or other offices, with consent to relocate if needed.
The Tavares Hotel Building sold to J M Coursey of Eustis his son former Marine lieutenant James V Y Coursey and R Carl Harris president of the Roulon Corp of Chicago who own Amhurst and Gladstone Apartments in Orlando. The building will be remodeled into three apartments 23 rooms with 17 baths plus a coffee shop dining room and hotel facilities. A soft drink bottling plant will be developed on extra lots, with nine families moving to Tavares and nearby areas, investments total several hundred thousand dollars.
