East Town Cottage Burned in Roberts Quarters

A negro cottage in Roberts quarters East Town burned Monday night about 8 o clock. Clarence Davis and family occupied the house. The fire started from an oil cook stove. Davis drove to the first station to report the blaze as the department arrived to find it a total loss but saved the adjoining property.

Den Chiefs training was announced to be offered by Pearly Safford with a Den Mothers course to follow. Paul Hopkins promoted to Scouts received his diploma by the Cub Master. Harry Wise earned the Webelos badge and Paul Hopkins won first prize at the Florida Exposition for a model his Mount Dora Pack took second prize for. Guests Stewart and his partner attended, welcoming the pack to Mount Dora.

Holland led across the state in the U S Senate race while Joe Hendricks held a strong 2 to 1 edge over Tom Voss in the district contest. Enjoy Canoe Trip to Silver Springs

David Harvey, newly discharged from the army, and A. G. Grant Jr. led a canoe and camping trip to Silver Springs. They left at 5:30 a.m. Sunday April 28 travelled up the Ocklawaha, camped at Paradise Silver Springs, faced a storm, foraged for blackberries near Stark's ferry, and reached Charlie Thorp's boat house by 7:40 p.m. mosquitoes were scarce and waterways were underused according to the group. The Sil ver Spray, led by Curtis Wise, was the only other boat they met.

Captain Wise Praised for Lake Eustis Rescue Efforts

Commodore J E Whitbeck commends Captain Harry J Wise of Mount Dora Florida for directing the search and recovery following an accidental drowning at Lake Eustis on April 20 1946. High winds and rough water were overcome to locate the body. Wise was a leading member of Flotilla 10 Mount Dora Coast Guard Auxiliary during wartime patrols.
