Mealy Bugs Multiply in Citrus Groves Across Florida
Reports from across Florida indicate mealy bugs are becoming abundant in citrus groves especially grapefruit. Entomologist J R Watson of the Experiment Station warns they threaten crops already below normal and stresses high pressure spraying with water or insecticides. Rust mites rise in some groves, but the same spray should help control them. Watson recommends lime sulfur spray in hot weather but warns it can burn foliage. A stronger mix of crude carbolic acid and fish oil soap can be used if rust mites and mealy bugs are plentiful. The station notes natural enemies like Crytolomemus lady beetles help, and 5 000 have been released in groves to combat pests.
