Wives as a Colonial Venture in Bermuda and Virginia
In 1622 the Virginia Company funded subsidiary ventures to attract investment. A plan to send 90 maids to Virginia as wives cost £12 or 150 pounds of tobacco per maid, offering “great contentment” to planters and boosters amid company decline. Historical note from Henry Wilkinson's The Adventurers of Bermuda.
