Stalk Cutters Cut Winter Erosion in Iowa Fields
Iowa State College extension engineer Dale Hull says using stalk cutters on cornfields this fall seals the soil with mulch, cutting soil loss to about 10 percent of unmulched land and surface runoff by 30 to 60 percent. More farmers are leaving stalks to lay over winter for easier spring plowing and quicker deterioration begins in spring.

Brucellosis Campaign Nears Total Victory in Iowa
Federal funds totaling 15 million advance the drive to eradicate brucellosis with speeded up testing in Iowa. Dr. Herrick of Iowa State College notes about 25 000 cattle tested monthly, with 265 000 tested by Nov 1, 1950, vs 201 118 in 1953 and 129 538 in 1952. The effort includes cattle and swine programs, indemnities, and per cow or per herd payment to vets. The Iowa agencies and farmers unite to wipe out a costly livestock disease with human health implications.
