Thick-Necked Onions Not Good For Storage
Ed Cott of Iowa State College warns that thick necked onions refuse long storage while thin necks store well if properly cured. Harvest with tops nearly dried, windrowed in cover, and stored cool and dry at about 30 degrees. Yellow Globe onions recommended for best storage.

Keep Hand Iron Free Of Sticking Starch
Iowa State College expert advises simple, nonmetal methods to remove starch residue from irons and prevent sticking. Salt on paper to scrub off dry starch, fine steel wool or moist cloth with scouring powder for cool iron, or rub beeswax or paraffin on hot plates to prevent sticking. Well cooked starch reduces sticking and eases ironing. An onmarket wax helps prevent sticking during starch preparation. A Rhode Island Red hen owned by John Hansen near Gray laid an unusually shaped egg two inches long and peanut shaped.

Milk Cow Numbers In Iowa Still Declining
Iowa dairy cattle continue to fall from a 1943 peak with 1 270 000 head recorded. Milk per cow hit a June 1 record though total milk for the first five months is 2 billion pounds short of last year due to fewer cows. Analysts cite high cattle prices for slaughter high feed costs and competitive farming as causes. A future rise depends on profits and improved feed outlook. Tim Larimore bought a farm near Harlan for 150 an acre noting historic price contrasts.
