Eastern Iowa towns admire Monticello for a famed fat steer contest and top fair attractions. The 1948 Fat Steer Show on August 20 offers the largest first prize in the nation, drawing cattlemen and reporters nationwide, while many residents have yet to attend.
Center Junction obituary notes John A. McDonald 87 died at home Saturday July 31. Born April 8, 1861, he married Esther Reade in 1882 and leaves nine children, 20 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and siblings. Funeral held in Wyoming with burial in Pioneer cemetery.
The Manchester Press features a three column box letter to Mayor and councilmen about Saturday parking on main streets. The writer Pat Baxter Oneida Iowa asks for a special ticket book to curb out of town cars blocking stores. Monticello shoppers recall past attempts at a municipal parking lot and wonder who will revive the plan.
Pvt. Francis H. Thomas, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Olin Thomas of Morley, former Hopkinton residents, returned from overseas and funeral services were held July 25 at Smykil Goettsch funeral home Anamosa. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery Monticello.
Mrs C C McKinstry and family arrived from Alameda California for a month long visit with relatives. The Yo Ads group plans a monthly meeting at Eloise Sutherland's home tonight. Willard Himebaugh visited Clinton relatives over the weekend. Claretta Husman returned to Monticello work after vacation with her parents. Mrs R A Naylor travels to California to visit daughters. granddaughters Sharon and Karen Freese accompany her home.
Mrs. Dorothy E. Rickless returned Friday from a five weeks' vacation visiting relatives at Riverside California and Tucson Arizona. Guests last weekend at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Max McCullough Monticello were Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Short and daughter Sharon Moline Illinois.
Lightning struck a Merrill's Grove gasoline station near Harlan last week. One 7,000 gallon tank exploded and burned while a second tank remained intact in the incident.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church lists Mass times and confessions with Holy Day schedules. Presbyterian, Castle Grove Lutheran, St John’s, St Matthew’s, Wayne Zion Lutheran, and Methodist churches provide service times, Sunday schools, and special programs including guest preachers and mission services. Public invites note Ladies Aid meetings and church fellowship events.
Sunday visitors to the Peter Puetz home in Scotch Grove included Michael Puetz and many Puetz family members from Petersburg Albany and Bernard plus the Delaney Sackett and Pfath guests. The group from Onslow Albany Dubuque and Bellevue joined for an afternoon of card playing and visiting.
The Jones County Inter-Church Council plans a booth at the Jones County Fair featuring selected materials from Daily Vacation Bible School. Twenty three churches participate with two absent, hosting duties assigned to committees and hostesses throughout the fair days. Sunday dinner guests were Mr and Mrs Wilbur Doxsee at the Hosford home.
