A nostalgic poem from the Chicago Record-Herald contrasts life today with the past. It notes no electric light, no telephone, no taxis, and modest earnings. Despite frugal living, grandpas won grandmas through simple, earnest affection and perseverance.
William Cheesewright known as Uncle Billie and a partner in Cheesewright & Machin died at his sister Mrs Machin's home in Parke County. He had lived in Montezuma for twelve years and was active in his firm despite illness. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. with Rev Hicks presiding and burial in Oakland cemetery. He was remembered as upright and helpful, bearing suffering with fortitude.
Frank Malone of Hillsdale was admitted to St Anthony's Hospital at T. H. on Thursday. An examination revealed stomach cancer. An operation was performed Monday and the disease was found far advanced and incurable. He is not expected to live more than a few days and his wife and two daughters are at his side.
About fifty Montezuma residents attended the Newport hill climb on Thursday with two to three thousand spectators from a wide area. Rain interrupted several events forcing a rush for shelter as crowds dissipated.
The Dana Chautauqua Association announces a six day program from September 9 to 14 1913. Events include Imperial Bell Ringers Mrs Elin G Turrentine and Hon Charles H Pool lectures. The tent rises in the school yard with surrounding camping and parking for autoes.
Geo Hinote staked off the ground for a five room cottage on land bought by Frank Bowman of Winfield Rawlings. Bowman plans to move to town after completion and will leave the farm briefly.
Frank Pressler expands his offerings with the Overland line for 1914. The five passenger model will sell for 1075 dollars fully equipped including the Gray and Davis self starter.
Attorney C. G. Powell suffered bruises and scratches after a colt darted into the road from Marion Brick Works duties causing a collision with his motorcycle. Powell escaped serious injury as the machine and rider fell together in a heap.
Mrs. Chas Humbert of West Union killed herself Saturday evening by drinking about 4 ounces of carbolic acid. She died in under twenty minutes. Poor health and despondency were cited. she leaves a husband and a thirteen year old child.
Roscoe D. Todd and Lula B. Smock were married by Rev. Calvin Smock in Coatsville. The couple, both young teachers, were attended by local residents as the Sun day nuptials concluded.
The Misses Marie McCord Marie Johnston Agnes and Helen McGinty and Messrs Ralph Johnston Walter McCord and William Gieger with Mr and Mrs Robert Sutton traveled to Turkey Run Monday evening. They spread a bountiful supper under the shade trees and returned home by moonlight, enjoying a pleasant outing.
Goldie Pickle visits Roachdale relatives and James Will Kemp with John Athern visit Indianapolis. Clamp on fencing by H S Cornwell promoted. Concert by Rockville Cornet Band at the pool Friday night promises a large crowd. Multiple town visits and family events noted along with coal dock contract and construction plans.

In response to a taxpayer suggestion a committee is selected and will meet at W. P. Montgomery's office on Thursday evening Aug 28 to plan a system of fire protection for Montezuma. Members include W. P. Montgomery Frank Ann S. P. Hancock A. EK Higbee A. Connor C. S. Overman. All are urged to attend.
The Rockville Cornet Band plans a concert at the bathing pool on Friday night August 29. The event is expected to draw a large crowd with many Rockville residents in attendance.
