Two Laborers Die as Boilers Fall at Federal Hospital Site
At 11 15 this forenoon two large boilers under placement in an extension of the heating plant at the Federal Hospital in Otteville fell crushing two laborers and injuring two others. The dead are John Ruttedge and an Italian worker known as Raphael. one injured man is George B. Deckert of 26 Canal Street, who was treated for head wounds and given later transport home. Coroner George H. Rackett ordered a full investigation with Anderzker Lewis E. Smith assisting in the handling of bodies. The Howes Tip Company oversaw the work, claiming proper precautions were taken, and a guard was placed around the scene. The incident caused great local excitement as investigators worked to determine cause. Continuous updates expected as details emerge.

Chester Smith of Middletown New York dies in France on November 12 from pneumonia while serving in the 13th Machine Gun Battalion. He left Chester May 2 with drafted men for Camp Wadsworth Spartanburg S C and sailed for France two months later. He had lived in the city ten years and worked as a fireman at Bordens Condenery before the war. A Washington dispatch notified Mrs Katie Jones of Fulton Street of his death.
